Burger Joints Of The World, Nathan’s Famous

20 January 2024
Nathans Famous Logo

Another American chain tracing their history back over 100 years. Starting life as a nickel hot dog stand in Coney Island in 1916, the chain bears the name of it’s co founder, Nathan Handwerker. Nathan started the business with his wife Ida. The hot dog recipe they used was her idea, with her grandmother creating the secret spice sauce.

Although they were Jewish, their produce lacked rabbinic supervision and the meat wasn’t kosher, they advertised it as ‘kosher style.’

Handwerker was an immigrant who arrived in New York and found work at Feltman’s restaurant in Coney Island.

Going Into Business For Himself

One legend has it that Eddie Cantor and Jimmy Durante, the ‘singing waiters’ encouraged him to start his own restaurant. The official company history doesn’t mention this, but it’s a nice story. The couple spent their life savings of $300 to start the business.

When he launched he undercut his former employer who was charging 10c for a hot dog. Nathan’s came in at 5c!

At the time, food regulation wasn’t really a thing, and hot dogs were considered cheap fare. Handwerker had customers dressed in surgeons smocks eating at his place, presumably surgeons would only eat good food.

Expansion

Nathan’s son Murray drove the expansion of the chain. A second branch in New York was added in 1959 and a third in 1965. By 1968 the company had gone public.

The family sold the chain to a group of private investors in 1987, at which point the chain was franchised and expanded rapidly. They acquired Kenny Rogers Roasters and Miami Subs Grill.

By 2001 Nathan’s Famous had 24 company owned units, 380 franchised units and 1400 stores in 17 foreign countries around the globe.

They signed a deal with major league baseball in 2017 to become the official hot dog sponsor.

The original store had remained open 365 days a year since its inception, until being forced to close due to hurricane Sandy, but six months later it was repaired and reopened.

One quirk is that the original store still served fried frogs legs which has been on the menu since the 1950’s

Hot Dog Contest

On the 4th July Nathan’s Famous hosts an annual hot dog eating contest. Starting in the 1970’s the contest sees contestants trying to eat as many hot dogs as possible in 10 minutes. The current record holder is Joey Chestnut with 76 hot dogs and Miki Sudo with 48 and 1/2 for the ladies.

Corn Dogs: A Fun-Filled Journey from Carnivals to Kitchen Tables

30 November 2023
Corn Dogs-For Hire

Corn dogs, those delectable, golden-brown treats on sticks, evoke memories of fun-filled days at fairs and carnivals. Their origin story is deeply rooted in the colourful history of American street food. These crispy, savoury snacks have not only captured the hearts of fair-goers but have also found their way into the comfort of our homes. Let’s embark on a journey to explore the delightful history and irresistible appeal of the beloved corn dog.

The Birth of the Corn Dog:

The birth of the corn dog is credited to the creative mind of Neil Fletcher, who introduced the concept in the 1940s. Originally called the “Pronto Pup,” it made its debut at the Texas State Fair. Neil Fletcher’s stroke of genius involved coating a hot dog with a thick layer of cornmeal batter, which was then deep-fried to a perfect golden crispness. The marriage of the sweetness of the cornmeal with the savory flavor of the hot dog was an instant hit, captivating the taste buds of fair attendees across the nation.

Rise to Popularity:

The 1950s and 1960s witnessed the corn dog’s swift ascent to fame, as it became a staple at state fairs, amusement parks, and other outdoor events. Its convenient, portable nature made it a favourite among families and thrill-seekers alike, solidifying its place as an iconic carnival food. With its irresistible combination of flavours and the novelty of being served on a stick, the corn dog became synonymous with carefree days and joyous indulgence.

As the love for corn dogs grew, so did its variations. Creative cooks and chefs experimented with different batters, including variations with spices, herbs, and alternative flours, catering to diverse tastes and dietary preferences. Moreover, the accessibility of pre-made options in supermarkets made it a convenient option for families seeking a quick and enjoyable meal at home.

In the contemporary culinary landscape, the corn dog continues to thrive, evolving to accommodate various dietary preferences and culinary trends. With the rise of plant-based diets, vegan and vegetarian versions of the corn dog have emerged, ensuring that this beloved snack remains inclusive and accessible to all.

The corn dog’s journey from a humble fairground snack to a beloved household favourite is a testament to its timeless appeal and adaptability. It embodies the spirit of joy and togetherness, transcending its status as a mere carnival treat to become a cherished part of American culinary culture. Whether enjoyed at a bustling fair or in the comfort of one’s home, the corn dog is more than just a tasty snack on a stick — it’s a symbol of shared happiness and lasting memories.

Street Food Carts For Your Event

20 January 2021
Street Food Cart Small

We have had the same range of carts for quite a period now for everything from street food carts to weddings. Heck, we average over 500 events a year, so obviously they are popular. Why change when it works?

Thing is during the lockdown, we have had that rare luxury, time. We began looking at many of our competitors, and realised that they are doing things we are not. What is more galling is the knowledge that at one time, we would have been doing them first.

Because of this we have designed and produced a range of removable panels that totally alter the styling of many of our ranges of carts and bar sections.

No1 daughter has also been pestering for us to add a more quirky street food type of catering unit.

To this end we eventually did just that, it was for a series of outdoor events, where we were serving 450 jacket potatoes a day, and we felt that the extra room this design allowed us would make it easier to operate.

Basic Street Food Option

Our first design is a bare bones, patterned plywood unit, meant to look slightly third worldy for a quirky feel.

It was used successfully for a number of the aforementioned jacket potato jobs, as well as doughnuts and hot dogs.

Sticking with the theme, the menu boards and clip art was all held on with mini cloths pegs, and the top sign stencilled with our favourite Sex Pistols font.

Red Ribbed Stall

Our next version was made using deep red corrugated panels, this gave a more industrial feel and was used for a number of Hot Chocolate/Hot Dog days at local schools.

Either unit can be used for any of our range of catering options. Indeed it is plenty roomy to add two or three offerings in the same stall.

Over the coming year we intend adding a number of additional options to our street food carts. So keep checking back. Or keep checking our website for more details of street food units.

National Hot Dog Day, How Do You Take It

23 July 2020
Hot Diggity Dog

Its 23rd July National Hot Dog Day. Hot diggety dog, or should we say dogs. That staple of fast food, beloved at stadiums around the world.

Our American cousins eat an estimated 20 billion a year. Whilst we don’t eat anywhere near that, they are an increasingly popular option on menu’s throughout the UK.

Frankfurt-am-Main in Germany is traditionally credited with originating the Frankfurter. Though this is in contention, by the claim that the “little-dog” sausage was invented by a certain Johann Georghehner, a butcher from Coberg in Germany. Whatever the true origin, in 1893 they became standard fare at baseball stadiums in the States. This tradition is believed to have been started by a St. Louis bar owner, Chris Von de Ahe, who was a German immigrant and owner of the St. Louis Browns major league baseball team.

The world’s biggest hot dog measured 669ft.
